Buried Treasure, By Cathleen Walsh    The year was 1987; my twin brother John and I would enjoy playing outside in our large backyard. Sometimes we would rake up different parts and make "nature rooms" and pretend we were the kings of the house. We could do whatever we wanted and it was all nature orientated.

One day my Mom came to me and my brother and gave us a very heavy black treasure box which looked like it was from a pirate ship. It had a skull and crossbones on it and was 100% iron.  She told us that we can keep it and put important things in it. At first I thought it was kind of scary but I soon started to draw warm to it. After some time passed my brother said I think we can make a time capsule out of it. He explained that we put the things we like very much in this treasure chest and lock it up and then bury it so we can go back to it in the future and have treasure. I remember saying that we didn't have a key, so I found a diary lock and key and was able to attach it on to the part of the hook of the chest. I remember putting in a baseball card that was unopened with the original bubble gum stick, a hello kitty toy that was my favorite and a strawberry shortcake mini doll that was my absolute idol as a child. Some other little things and closed the chest. I remember asking John after you bury it how we would  know where it is to go back to. He said that's a very good question and that's why I'm drawing a treasure map. Because our backyard had many trees at the time, John used different trees and bushes as landmarks. Finally, an "X" to mark the spot as to where to find the treasure chest in the future. At first I felt kinda sad because I couldn't play with my toys I loved so much for a while but I began to feel excited to have something to go back to when I'm older. Putting the lock on and digging the hole it was almost completed.

When it was all done John said that he's putting the treasure map and key in a safe place so when we wanted to go back to it, there would be no problem.  Then time went by, about a year or so.

One day, after forgetting about our little buried treasure, John said that he was look8ng for the treasure map but cannot find it. I looked in my entire room as he did but there was no sign of the map or key. Even more time went by and because the map and key was misplaced I decided to start digging near the spot. I searched for a long time but couldn't find it. It was impossible. Our buried treasure was lost and never to be found again by the very people who placed the treasure there..........Or was it?
